Prepping to ace that video interview?

Technology has dramatically changed the recruitment landscape over recent years, having made the whole process more flexible and convenient. One very popular tool in modern day recruitment is the video interview.

Unlike face-to-face and telephone interviews, there are a number of other things you’ll need to consider for a Teams/Zoom interview, so we’ve rounded up our 5 top tips to help you ace it first time around:

1. Look at the camera, NOT the screen

As tempting as it is to watch yourself during a video call, make sure you keep looking directly into the camera to ensure you keep eye contact with the interviewer throughout the interview.

2. Prepare beforehand

You’ve heard the expression ‘by failing to prepare, you prepare to fail’ and this couldn’t be more true when it comes to a video interview. An awkward silence will really stand out in a virtual chat so make sure you’ve got plenty of well-researched answers up your sleeve to keep the interviewer engaged.

3. Close other programmes

Having other noisy notifications going off throughout your video call is both distracting and irritating for the interviewer, so ensure all other programmes are closed on your computer to avoid any unwanted interruptions.

4. Dress to impress

Apart from the fact you won’t be there in person, the same rules apply for dress code. Dressing professionally (head to toe, not just from the waist up) is essential in a video interview and an untidy appearance won’t be excused!

5. Consider your surroundings

This one is absolutely crucial – make sure you pick a good quiet spot with no distractions, a neutral backdrop and sufficient lighting. Oh and of course, make sure you have a (very) good internet connection beforehand.
