From figuring out what to wear to making a good first impression with your new boss and colleagues, it’s safe to say that the first day of a new job can be a little nerve wracking!
To help set your mind to rest, we’ve put together a quick list of dos and don’ts for surviving your first day in a new working environment:
1. Get a good night’s sleep beforehand
Getting a good night’s sleep the night before will leave you feeling refreshed and ready to start your first day full of energy. Don’t forget to make sure you set an alarm too!
2. Don’t be late!
Few things make a bad impression quite like turning up late on your first day. Make sure you check your commute time the night before and plan to arrive in 10 minutes early to be on the safe side.
3. Keep off your phone
Although you’re likely to be a little light on workload during your first day, avoid resorting to using your phone to pass the time. This can make a really bad impression to your new employer.
4. Don’t be the first person to ask about lunch
Bringing up the topic of your lunch break in the office could make you look bored, so avoid the subject unless you’re invited to lunch by a new colleague/your new boss. If you’re bringing in a packed lunch – make sure you avoid tuna or egg salad!
5. Offer to make tea
Offering to do a tea run in the office will show your new team that you’re willing to pull your own weight. Bear in mind, you could be remembered for your tea making skills so make it a good one!
Above all, just remember to relax and be yourself. And good luck!
