4 tips for acing that interview

The dreaded job interview – we’ve all had them, we’ve all hated them, but we’ve all survived them. Whilst there’s no written formula for succeeding in an interview, there are several things you can do to help you stand out from your competition. We’ve rounded up some of our top tips below…

1.     Prep like there’s no tomorrow

When it comes to making an impression at an interview, never underestimate the power of preparation. Researching the company in question down to the finest details will not only impress the hell out of your interviewer but it’s also very useful exercise in helping you really get to know where you and your skill set would fit into the business. You’ll want to make sure you know the role inside out and be prepared to answer why you are just the person to fill the spot, highlighting your relevant experience and skills along the way. Make sure you also take a look at the wider industry in question and spare some time preparing answers to those general interview questions too!

2.     Grill your recruiter

When working with a recruitment agency, don’t forget to use your recruiter to your best advantage! It’s their job to help you get as prepared as possible so make sure to ask them as many questions as you possibly can about what the interview process is likely to entail and how you can best prepare. Your recruiter has the all-important insight into the company and the role in question so be sure to download that knowledge and use it to your advantage.

3.     Be yourself

You, your glowing CV and cover letter, are what got you here so have faith in yourself. Roughly 33% of bosses know within the first 90 seconds whether they are going to hire you or not, therefore confidence and self-belief are key. Remember to keep positive and enthusiastic throughout, showing the interviewer that you are motivated and eager to be a part of their team. Nerves are natural but try to keep these at bay by making sure you don’t rush through your answers; take your time. Most importantly of all – remember to smile!

4.     Don’t lose heart

The most important thing to remember with job interviews is not to lose heart if you don’t get the job. Sometimes you can feel as if you’ve jumped through all the necessary hoops and you still don’t quite land it. It’s a competitive world out there and often it comes down to a toss-up between a handful of individuals. You can’t win them all unfortunately, but just know that each interview is useful experience and will ultimately help you on your path to finding your perfect career.
